Long wait for fair trial

The lack of fair hearings and access to court are the most frequent problems regarding the right to fair trial in Serbia, according to a report published by Civil Rights Defenders in collaboration with Youth Initiative for Human Rights (YIHR).

“The cases examined in the report are great parameters for a critical and objective problematization of the justice reform in Serbia and of the judiciary’s readiness to fully apply international and domestic standards”, said Sumeja Tulic, Programme Officer at Civil Rights Defenders in Sarajevo.

According to the report there are also great problems with the guarantee of trial within a reasonable time. Some Judges do not even know that they can influence the acceleration of procedures.

The Report is a result of young researchers dedicated work. Together they have monitored more than 20 criminal and civil cases before national courts, after completing training in human rights in 2011. The second part of the report will be published in January 2012.
