We are seeking an intern for the East and Horn of Africa Department

The internship consists of: Assisting the Program Director in his daily work. The tasks are varied and include writing articles, conducting research and monitoring of regional developments, drafting reports, some administrative work and assisting with the preparation of various activities and events in Sweden and abroad. In the context of our capacity building trainings for human rights defenders, the intern will be involved in planning, logistics and communicating with participants.

Interns at Civil Rights Defenders will be involved in internal workshops on topics within our field, and are encouraged to take part in external events, such as seminars and meetings.


A genuine interest in human rights and a basic knowledge of Civil Rights Defenders’ work;
Good knowledge of the East and Horn of Africa region and the state of human rights in the region;
Enrolled in a university in Sweden or abroad within the last year of a Bachelor degree or at Masters level. Also eligible are applicants who are recent graduates (within 1 year from graduation);
Preferred degree in law, political science, journalism, human rights or equivalent
Excellent knowledge of English. Basic Swedish is a requirement; fluency is a strong advantage;
Excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently and responsibly;
Good drafting skills and experience in writing reports, articles and doing research;
Experience of event planning is an asset.

The internship starts August 1 and runs until December 31, 2015. The application must be written in English and should include a cover letter and resume.
