The Russian LGBT movement breaks new ground

On September 16-25 our partner organisation Coming Out will arrange the second international queer culture festival, in St Petersburg, with our support and active participation.

The aim of the festival is to put a focus on the right to be who you are, and to encourage people to think outside the box. The festival focuses on culture as a means of expression and the Swedish singer-songwriter Jay Jay Johanson will participate at a concert on the last evening of the festival.

Civil Rights Defenders has cooperated with the Russian LGBT movement for a couple of years, and during this time the LGBT groups have advanced considerably and are now stronger and better organised. But, still many obstacles remain before the LGBT community will be able to enjoy the same rights as everybody else. Daily discrimination and a justice system far behind other European countries are just some of the obstacles.
