Ales Bialiatski’s appeal dismissed

On January 24, the Minsk city court upheld the 4.5-year verdict against Ales Bialiatski, Chair of Human Rights Centre Viasna and vice-president of International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH).

” We are not the least surprised by the decision. The Belarusian regime is using the process against Ales Bialiatski to silence human rights defenders in the country. Our thoughts go to our brave colleague and his family, said Joanna Kurosz, Programme Director at Civil Rights Defenders.

On November 24, 2011, the district court sentenced Ales Bialiatski for tax evasion to four and a half years in prison and confiscation of property. The trial and sentence of Bialiatski is politically motivated and directly connected to his work as a human rights defender.
