Civil society calls for withdrawal of ASEAN Human Rights Declaration

On 15 November, 64 grassroots, national, regional, and international civil society groups called upon ASEAN (The Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Member States to postpone the adoption of the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration. The declaration does not follow existing international human rights standards and is therefore not worthy of its name.

Instead of adopting the declaration, civil society organisations urge ASEAN Member States to send the draft back to the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) with instruction to revise it so that it accords with international human rights law.

These calls are made ahead of the ASEAN Summit on 18-20 November, where the declaration is expected to be adopted.
