Azeri journalist, human rights defender and Natalia Project Bearer Rasul Jafarov will spend his 30th birthday behind bars. He and many of his fellow human rights defenders are being held in pre-trial detention of up to three months accused of tax evasion, illegal commercial activity and abuse of authority and are facing long prison sentences.

“Civil Rights Defenders calls on the Azeri authorities to immediately release Rasul Jafarov and all other political prisoners languishing in prison. The on-going crackdown on civil society in Azerbaijan further demonstrates how the Aliyev regime continues to wield its authoritarian rule despite the country presiding over the Council of Europe. Such a situation breaches every civil and political right for which the Council stands for”, says Robert Hårdh, Executive Director at Civil Rights Defenders.

Civil Rights Defenders urge the Azeri authorities to expedite the unconditional release of Rasul Jafarov, Intigam Aliyev, Leyla Yunus and Arif Yunusov and call on the authorities to immediately honour their obligations under the various human rights conventions and international law mechanisms ratified by Azerbaijan.
