Cecilia Ruben in Memoriam
Our friend and colleague, Cecilia Ruben (born in 1946), has passed away on 19 August, 2013. Cecilia was a highly regarded member of Civil Rights Defenders Board and an active member of the organisation for many years. She will be missed by her colleagues within the Board as well as by the staff at Civil Rights Defenders.
“Cecilia had considerable experience from international work and was deeply committed to human rights and justice issues. She was a fun-loving and positive person and she always had a good word to spare”, said Robert Hårdh, Executive Director of Civil Rights Defenders.
Cecilia was trained as an urban planner at Columbia University in New York and an expert on sustainable development. Her research on environment and development issues focused on sanitation and communication. After having worked with various UN Agencies, she began working for the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) when the institute was newly formed 24 years ago.
Cecilia has since the1960’s been involved in human rights issues and, apart from being a member of Civil Rights Defenders Board (2010-2013) she was also involved in Save the Children and the Mehmed Uzun Committe, pursuing freedom for Kurdish authors and publishers.
“Cecilia made a very important contribution to the Board. She had a real ability to see individual issues and the organisation’s work in a broader perspective. Cecilia was also a warm and friendly person who was very easy to like!” Said Percy Bratt, Chairman of the Board.News.
