Providing a safe haven for Belarusian human rights defenders

The purpose of our support to the Human Rights House in Vilnius, Lithuania, is to provide Belarusian human rights defenders a safe place to plan and carry out activities. In the house in exile Belarusian organisations can have seminars, meetings and other activities that cannot be conducted inside Belarus due to the difficult political situation. It increases the level of protection and freedom for them, as well as providing a safe storage for materials and documents that are under threat inside Belarus.

The house is part of the Human Rights House Network, consisting of 12 existing or emerging houses around the world. The main aim of the Human Rights House Network is to offer protection for human rights defenders, reduce costs, and enable better use of collected experience among organisations. There were plans to open a house in Minsk for a long time but this proved impossible due to obstacles from the regime.
